Q & A

Q: What is Tantra?

A: At its core, Tantra is a “path” of spiritual transformation that seeks to re-unite the “individual” with the divine or cosmic consciousness. It is a “path” to liberation. Tantra is all about our inner nature.

It helps us to remember, and to reconnect with who we actually already are but maybe we forgot. By using tantra methods, we come back home. It is a pathless path back to (inner) wholeness.

Tantra is distinct from certain other spiritual traditions in that it focuses on liberation via the physical body rather than through transcendence of it. It uses somatic and energy techniques to rewire the nervous system and to change (aspects of) your life in the way you desire.

Q: How are the elements relevant in tantra?

A: The ‘world out there’ is fundamentally the same as the ‘world in us’. The same five elements that compose its body, – earth, fire, water, air, ether – constitute our own. Working with the elemental forces within ourselves, and aligning with the deeper rhythms of nature supports our growth and transformation. Below some information about each element.

Earth
Energetic Qualities: Earth represents stability, grounding, nourishment, and physical manifestation. It symbolizes the solid foundation upon which all life is built and the connection to the material realm.
Practices: Grounding practices, such as yoga asana, walking meditation, and connecting with nature. Rituals involving earthy elements, such as stones, crystals, and plants, can also deepen the connection to the earth’s energy and support inner stability and resilience.
Inner Work: Working with the earth element involves rooting oneself in the present moment, connecting with the body, and cultivating a sense of security and abundance. It encourages us to honour our physical needs, appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and manifest our dreams with patience and perseverance.

Water
Energetic Qualities: Water symbolizes flow, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and purification. It represents the power of intuition, empathy, and the ability to navigate the ebb and flow of life’s currents.
Practices: Water-based practices, such as swimming or watsu, can help to connect with the fluidity of the water element and release emotional tension. Meditation practices focused on inner reflection, self-compassion, and forgiveness also support emotional healing.
Inner Work: Working with the water element involves embracing emotional fluidity, cultivating compassion, and surrendering to the natural rhythms of life. It encourages you to honour your feelings, release emotional blockages, and embrace vulnerability as a source of strength.

Fire
Energetic Qualities: Fire is associated with transformation, passion, willpower, and the spark of inspiration. It represents the energy of action and the drive to create change.
Practices: Kundalini yoga, breathwork, and dynamic movement practices can help activate the fire element within the body. Meditations focused on visualization and mantra chanting can also harness the fiery energy for inner transformation.
Inner Work: Working with the fire element involves igniting the inner flame of motivation, courage, and creativity. It encourages us to connect with our desires, pursue our passions, and overcome obstacles with determination.

Air
Energetic Qualities: Air symbolizes movement, expansion, communication, and the power of the mind. It represents the breath of life and the flow of ideas and inspiration.
Practices: Breathwork techniques, such as pranayama and conscious breathing, can help to connect with the air element and access a sense of spaciousness and clarity.
Inner Work: Working with the air element involves cultivating mental clarity, open-mindedness, and effective communication. It encourages us to release mental clutter, embrace new perspectives, and express yourself authentically.

Ether
Energetic Qualities: Ether represents expansiveness (the infinite space in which all other elements exist), subtlety (it is intangible, beyond the physical, it is the essence of spirit and consciousness), unity (interconnectedness of all things), clarity (a space of stillness and silence where the mind can find peace and the soul can connect with its true nature), and Divine Presence.
Practices: Breathwork techniques, meditation, sound healing, energy work, and divination tools (such as tarot cards, oracle cards, or pendulums) to access intuitive guidance and insights from the realm of ether.
Inner Work: Working with ether involves letting go of attachments and embracing the subtle realms of existence entering into a state of pure being. It invites you to expand your consciousness beyond the limitations of the physical body and mind, to deepening your awareness and connection with the vastness of the cosmos. Ether encourages to cultivate a state of presence to fully experience the richness of each moment. It also involves honoring and trusting your intuitive guidance, and aligning your individual will with the divine will, surrendering to the greater wisdom.

Q: Are there any s.xual practises? There are certain misconceptions about tantra so this question and answer are relevant.

A: No, during this weekend there will not be any s.xual practises.

It is a misconception to think that tantra is about s.x. Only a very small part of tantra is about s.x, and the physical aspects of it, and that is because tantra is a life-embracing philosophy that does not exclude anything. It includes everything.

When we work with s.xual energy (also called life force energy) we work with activating the full potential of our s.xual energy from muladhara (first chakra) to sahasrara (seventh chakra). It does not mean that s.xual practises are involved.

Your body is part of nature. The same five elements that compose nature’s body – earth, fire, water, air, ether – constitute your own. The invitation is to let yourself be guided by the purity of nature – through your body – while working with the strongest force of nature; life force.

Without life force (s.xual energy) there is no creation, no (re)birth. Our s.xual energy is the most powerful energy we have for creating in the physical world.

Q: Is there nudity in this weekend?

A: During this weekend there may be one or more moments where nudity is welcome. This could be when you use the sauna, are outside in the grass amongst the trees (e.g. for meditation or rest), or in an embodiment exercise (e.g. dance / movement).

Welcoming nudity in these few specific contexts, comes from a place of innocence and connection with your body. It has nothing to do with s.x. And you can absolutely choose to remaining fully dressed throughout the whole weekend, never being without clothes in our public spaces.

Q: Is this retreat led in English or Dutch?

A: Your retreat host has the Dutch nationality. However, the retreat will be led in English as some participants do not speak Dutch. Kamala translates when needed. She is used to working with bilingual groups and sharing instructions in both English and Dutch if needed.

Q: What to bring for this weekend retreat?

A: Packing list.

  • Notebook and pen
  • Water bottle for refill
  • Ear plugs
  • Blindfold
  • Natural insect repellent
  • Sarongs 2x, large full body size
